It is difficult to compare the comets around ß Pictoris to those in our Solar system, which is much older with its 4.6 billion years. The ß Pictoris system is observed at an early stage of its development. Fortunately, it is not the only star within reach of our telescopes; others, in more or less advanced stages of evolution, could also be surrounded by reservoirs of comets. Around some young stars, the satellites Spitzer and Herschel observed in effect the presence of water vapor up to a hundred astronomical units of the star, which probably results from the evaporation of comets.
